Participant Information:
Electric Cooking Research Study in Kenya

What is this study about?

This is a 12-month study that is designed to investigate how households cook with electricity and how this changes with different financial incentives. This study aims to generate evidence that can be used to make electric cooking more affordable in Kenya.

Who qualifies for the study?

All customers who purchase a metered induction stove or electric pressure cooker from a distributor that is qualified under the EnDev Higher Tier Cooking (HTC) Results Based Reimbursement (RBR) program are eligible for the study. Participants must not have an electricity meter that is shared with other households and must not give their induction stove or electric pressure cooker to another household.

What are participants asked to do in this study?

As part of this study, participants agree to share their electricity consumption data with the researchers. This data includes analysis of all electricity usage data collected from participants’ smart-metered cooking appliances, as well as participants’ recent household electricity purchase data from KPLC. A subset of participants will be asked to complete an optional 15 minute phone survey at both the beginning and end of the study that will cover questions about participant demographics, cooking behaviors, and perceptions of electric cooking. Participants are free to leave the study at any point without any negative repercussions. Participants also agree to communicate with their appliance distributor if they change electricity meters or transfer ownership of their appliance during the course of the study.

What are the benefits of this study?

Participants can expect to receive a token credited to their household electricity meter as part of the incentive package offered under the RBR program. Any benefits under this study are finite in duration and will not be offered after the end of the study.

What are the risks of the study?

The risks of participating in this study are minimal but relate to your data that is collected by the cooking appliance distributors as part of the HTC RBR program. This data includes your name, phone number, and KPLC meter number. This data will be shared with the researcher team for the purpose of implementing this study. In the event of a security breach, this data could potentially be accessed by a third party.

How is my data being handled? Who is using it?

Researchers will only use your personally identifiable information for the intended purposes of this study (example: calling you to ask if you are willing to participate in a phone survey). Your personally identifiable information will not be shared with 3rd parties unless you have given additional written consent. All data shown in publications resulting from this research will be completely anonymised.

Who is behind this study?
